Janeth Reyna is an ESL student in our Study and Work Program. The following is an interview with her about her work experience in Vancouver.
What are your daily hours of work?
8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
What is the most difficult part of your internship?
The most difficult part is dealing with phone calls. Most of the customers are from Australia or other English speaking countries with different accents. Sometimes it’s hard to understand Canadians because some of the people who call are very familiar with the staff and they speak very fast and friendly, but for me everyone is very new. People from other countries whose English is their second language is difficult to understand, especially when their levels are not very high.
Please describe the amount of work you have been doing.
Just enough.
Is there anything you feel that you should do to make your internship experience better?
I think I must keep on listening to a lot of English in different accents and test my listening skills. I am also thinking about studying the company more and understand better what they offer. There are a lot of details that sometimes I miss or forget easily. I think I should also control my nerves because I get nervous whenever the phone rings and I have to answer, as well as when people walk into the office and I have to explain things to them.
Is there anything you want your host company to do to make your internship experience better?
I think they are perfect! They are being very patient with me and understand very well that English is not my first language. Sometimes they even deal with the phone calls that I don´t understand.
Is there anything you would like us to speak to your host about?
There is nothing so far. 🙂
